摘要:The growing demand for companionship among older adults has resulted in a significant rise in pet ownership among this demographic. However, there is a paucity of research exploring the multifaceted caregiving experiences associated with ailing pets among older adults. This study addresses the gap by investigating the complex dynamics of caring for ailing pets among older adults. This qualitative study employed semi-structured interviews with older adults who had cared for ailing pets. Participants were recruited through purposive sampling to ensure a diverse range of pet ownership experiences. Content analysis was conducted to identify the main themes and interpret the lived experiences of older caregivers. Five major themes emerged: (1) Emotional challenges, encompassing anxiety, helplessness, sadness, and remorse; (2) Caregiving burden, including physical, psychological, and financial strains; (3) Disruption of personal life, highlighting shifts in daily routines and social interactions; (4) Seeking veterinary services, detailing reliance on offline and online veterinary care; and (5) Anticipation of social support. These findings illustrate the intricate interplay between the responsibilities of pet caregiving and the aging process. The findings illuminate the profound emotional and practical challenges faced by older adults when caring for ailing pets. The interconnectedness of human and animal wellbeing underscores the need for comprehensive support systems that address the needs of both. To promote mutual flourishing, it is vital to enhance the wellbeing of older caregivers and their companion animals through accessible veterinary care, emotional support, and robust social infrastructure.
